White cops and black people

I was reading an article by John McWhorter here about riding in a cab in Jersey on the way home.  The cab was stopped for a traffic stop, the cop went back to his squad to check him out.  It was taking the cop a long time, McWhorter thought he was doing it on purpose, so he decided to get out of the cab and walk the rest of the way.  When the copper seen that he told him to stop and asked him where he was going and hassled him a bit but said he could go.   He kind of thought he was just doing his job because of the grug problem in that area but also that he was acting like a jerk.  He thought that for a lot of black kids that cop was the only contact they have with white people and that fostered hatred for white people.

I was watching the RNC the last night and afterwards on the screen it said McCain and Palin were leaving for Milwaukee in a few minutes and since I live only 4 or 5 miles from the airpost they were landing at, I thought I would drive down there and see them come in.  I got there a little early and was waiting when a motorcycle cop was getting ready to block the street close to where I was parked.  A few minutes later I walked over to him to ask if it would be OK if I walked over to where I thought they would come out.  And in a very gruff voice said ‘why do you want to go over there, that is private’.  I was a little taken back by that responsebut thought they are like that for a reason maybe not a good reason but a reason.  Since the cop was white and I was white I didn’t think too much of it.  I’m not sure what I am saying here but sometimes things aren’t what they seem like.  I know that is easy for me to say because we have different experiences.  I wish more black leaders would make this point to black people.
